Special session update
Because the Legislature was unable to pass budgets on time, we are now in what’s called a “special session.” Budget negotiators have continued to meet, but differences still remain on taxes and spending.
State government is already growing by 8.6 percent this budget cycle, taking in $3 billion more in tax revenues. Republicans largely believe that is enough money to cover everything we need to fund, including K-12 education.
Democrats, including Gov. Jay Inslee, largely believe more tax dollars are needed. They are proposing a variety of new and increased taxes – including a carbon tax and a capital gains income tax – to the tune of about $1.5 billion.
I hope we can come to an agreement without imposing a heavy new tax burden on working families. It’s important for state government to live within its means.
That’s all for now. Again, please join us for the telephone town hall tomorrow evening, and remember, I am always available to answer your questions, comments and concerns.
Thank you. It is an honor to serve you.
